Ciaowdy!

This morning, we woke up early to head to Rome. The scenic bus ride was about two and a half hours long. After a quick breakfast and excited conversations, we arrived. We split up into two groups in order to better explore the colorful city: one walked to the Colosseum, while the other took taxis to explore Vatican City.

We quickly learned one important lesson to adapt to the bustling streets and hot sun: walk with intent! We had to make sure everybody knew the plan and how to get to the destination safely. This is valuable in life because it can be easy to leave people behind when working in a team.

After a walk filled with many sights, we finally arrived at the sparkling Colosseum! Although the line was too long to go inside, we admired its beauty from every angle around the outside. It was incredible to experience the powerful presence of this towering sight. With the help of Donna Lee and Google Maps as our tour guide, we realized that understanding the historical significance of something can help us appreciate it much more.

Meanwhile, the students at the Vatican visited St. Peter’s Basilica. Some of them felt especially connected to the space because they remember watching masses take place there on television. Being present in a place that draws people from all over the world allowed them to feel an incredible sense of unity with their faith.

We met back up at the Pantheon and sought out lunch. Students practiced ordering in Italian and navigating their way through the city. After eating our delicious meals and catching shade by the Trevi Fountain, we headed back to Assisi.

We were reminded of what Mr. Tom Fitzhugh advised us in the airport before we departed: slow down and live in the moment. In a huge city like Rome, it is easy to get swept up in the chaos. To best appreciate an amazing experience like this, it is important to soak things in as they are happening.

After another bus ride filled with conversation, games, and a few naps, we arrived back in Assisi for dinner. We wrapped up the day with gelato and dancing in the square. As we get ready for bedtime, we look forward to our last full day in the beautiful town of Assisi.

See you tomorrow!
